Weaving Workshop to be Offered
in Winnipeg by MWFA in Fall 2010

NEW REP WEAVE:

DESIGN, THEORY, AND TECHNIQUE OF 2-, 3-, 4-, 6-, & 8-BLOCK

Instructor: Joanne Tallarovic

October 22-24, 2010

New projects that supplement Joanne’s book, "REP WEAVE and BEYOND" (The Weaver's Studio series) from Interweave Press will inspire your creative spirit to take a new and different approach to an old technique. Use the theory and technique of Scandinavian rep weave or (Swedish ripsmatta) in this 3-day round-robin workshop for weavers of all levels.

Working on 4- and 8-shaft looms, students will weave samples of 2-, 3-, 4-, 6- and 8-block designs.  Patterns will be woven as follows:  2 blocks on 2 or 4 shafts, 3 blocks on 4 and 8 shafts, 4 blocks on 4 and 8 shafts, and 8 blocks on 8 shafts.

The instructor will furnish worksheets, warping instructions and other important information six weeks prior to the workshop and looms must be dressed and ready for weaving the first morning.  Width of warps will be 12” in the reed with length of samples to be determined by the student.  Threading patterns are established by the worksheet; however each student will design the treadling pattern as they weave each sample.  Students are encouraged to use a variety of solid and printed fabrics in order to achieve effects beyond those normally associated with ripsmatta.

Each student will receive a notebook of new weave drafts used in the workshop. The book, Rep Weave and Beyond, is out of print but you may find copies on amazon.com. If students already have the book they should bring it to class. The workshop follows all procedures detailed in the book and it can be used as a textbook in the workshop.

Knowledge of profile and block drafts is helpful.  However, all drafts and drafting procedures will be covered in class.  This is an excellent workshop for beginning through advanced weavers.

Daily activity includes weaving, lecture, and technical information. The instructor will point out problem areas and demonstrate weaving procedures to help students understand proper solutions.

Students shall be responsible for the following:  4- or 8-shaft floor loom warped according to worksheet specifications, 8/4 cotton carpet warp, boat shuttle, bobbins or quills. Cotton fabrics (rags) cut 1 inch wide with grain of fabric, stick shuttles, notebook, pencil and the usual workshop materials. If you have a bobbin winder, please bring it, and mark your names on all tools.

Number of participants: 6 minimum, 12 maximum.  Registration deadline:  Thursday, May 27, 2010

Please contact MWFA Workshop Coordinator, Anne Gilmer (agilmer@shaw.ca), for additional information.
